The newly-installed 950-ton section of the $14.2 million pedestrian bridge at SW 8th St. and SW 109th Ave. collapsed Thursday afternoon, at approximately 1:45 p.m. injuring six people and causing several fatalities, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
At least two people were seen taken to ambulances and one person being transported as a trauma alert to Kendall Regional Hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Five days ago, the 950-ton part of the bridge was “swung” over on Saturday, March 10 using the Self-Propelled Modular Transporters technology used during the construction. The University stated that the modular construction method would reduce potential risks to workers, commuters and pedestrians, while minimizing traffic interruptions.
